We developed the client product to improve the ergonomic fit for riders of all sizes while also improving vibration reduction. Developing the product involved two teams of engineers and designers concurrently performing materials research and ergonomic design and prototyping.‍

Challenge

Smart fit before or after purchase

The design team started with an ergonomic competitive analysis of the top saddle designs as well as extensive user testing to identify flaws.  We removed the frustrating user experience of getting sized before purchasing by allowing the user to adjust the width at any time, pre- or post-purchase.

Approach

Optmizing saddle shape at any width

Maintaining an optimal saddle shape at any width adjustment proved to be a challenge, requiring three rounds of prototyping to fine-tune to our satisfaction.   We built a small vacuum-forming tool and plug for the first prototype as a static shape to test the initial ergonomic design.  The second prototype added in the width-adjustment feature, as well as the initial test for the unibody rail design.  The third prototype consists of a 3D-printed aluminum unibody rail, SLS shell, and the proprietary combination of vibration reduction materials – finally combining all aspects of the project into a finished product.

Testable solutions

Not only did Trig develop a breakthrough ergonomic saddle design, but we also built fully functional and aesthetic pre-production prototypes for use in testing and initial sales presentations.

In 2016, the ALTR ERGO Sanctuary Saddle was awarded a Bronze International Design Excellence Award from the Industrial Designer's Society of America. The Sanctuary is the result of a multi-faceted engagement between the two companies, with Trig providing ALTR Ergo with a range of innovation services, including customer research, ergonomic testing, and work with textiles engineering students at North Carolina State University to develop new materials to optimize the Sanctuary Saddle. In addition, Trig provided full industrial design and mechanical design for Sanctuary, as well as the development of multiple marketing assets, including logos, packaging, website, promotional materials, and naming of products and proprietary components.

ALTR ERGO is dedicated to a new way of thinking about cycling and other pursuits in vibration environments. Their signature product empowers riders to achieve oneness with the ride itself in a way that preserves comfort and prevents injury at levels never before conceived. ALTR ERGO is the maker of the award-winning Sanctuary Saddle, featuring the twin technologies, ALTR FIT and VIBEABIDE. With the custom width-selecting ALTRFIT mechanism and the revolutionary VIBEABIDE vibration damping system, the Sanctuary marks the next phase in the evolution in bicycle saddles.
