Industrial Design Internship (Design + Development Team)

Our Process: Explore, Prototype, and Build

Most people can’t get their heads around how a concept becomes a product in the marketplace. It’s a difficult road to success that necessitates processes that continuously improve product development over time. We are Design Thinkers with an innate ability to manage risk through multiple small experiments. We are explorers of new technologies and techniques, constantly testing the effectiveness of our discoveries through creative use of prototypes, then building out methodologies to consistently extract value from validated prototypes.

Our ideal candidate has the following skills and abilities:

Responsibilities

  • Actively support the Design + Development team with overall project and technical design efforts across multiple products
  • Support the team in material, off-the-shelf component, and vendor sourcing activities
  • Assist in prototype assemblies and evaluations
  • Participate in virtual ideation sessions by contributing quick and rapid sketches
  • Develop sketches and renderings of new product concepts
  • Support Trig’s internal projects
  • Inject energy, enthusiasm and creativity into everything you touch

Requirements

  • Working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design or Product Design
  • Completed second year of Industrial Design coursework
  • Self-starter with a keen desire to learn
  • Experience with SolidWorks and Adobe Illustrator. Keyshot experience preferred
  • Ability to work a minimum of 10 hours per week for the duration of the internship
  • Be available to check in on a weekly basis and at key milestones with Industrial Design + Development Lead
  • Ability to travel to the Raleigh/Durham area to engage with design team and/or participate in prototype builds
  • Embrace the Curious Tinkerer mindset, with a strong desire to push against the creative constraints to deliver results that are thoughtful, game-changing, and solve real problems

Qualifications

  • Submit shareable work via online portfolio or website demonstrating sketching ability and creative problem solving skills
  • Needs to demonstrate strong visual communication skills - should be comfortable with hand sketching and familiar with rendering software (Sketchbook Pro, Photoshop, or similar)
  • Comfortable creating 3D CAD geometry using SolidWorks
  • Familiarity with creating 3D CAD Animations (Keyshot preferable)
  • Completed coursework in materials and processes.
  • Part prototyping via CNC, laser cutting, 3D printing and other methods is a plus!

Internship Details

  • Tentative Internship Duration: 14-16 weeks
